July 13th & 14th West Palm Beach Dog Show

Cane Sets A New Record & More!

WinQuest Chambray Storm Warning Cane, owned by Tracy & Bill Graham did this weekend what had never been done before by any Chambray male dog. He became the youngest male puppy to win points before they were a year old!!!! Up until this weekend, it was Dusty that won on the day of his first birthday, Cane is only 7 month's old.

Just in case someone thought that win was a fluke, he wins back to back Winners Dog on Sunday as well, giving him 4 points for the weekend of shows.

In addition at Saturday's show, Cane's sire, Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff took his 15th career Best Of Breed

Trooper Wins Jr Puppy & Group 3 @ Match

Chambray's Ruff Rider (Trooper) owned by Matt $ Kathrine Chapman continues the Chambray winning match tradition by winning Best Junior Labrador puppy and a Group 3 in the Sporting Groups. This win makes it 17 matches in a row that Chambray puppies have dominated.

Jewel Dazzles At Orlando

th Johanna and coming off a 3 month conditioning program, she was in top form in a very competitive 12 to 18 class and then out-shined the rest of the winners in the Winners Bitch c0mpetition for her 1st 3-point major win. The major held right on the nose, but for added insurance she went BOS over bitch specials. Jewel now has 5 points and the 1 major.

Chambray Trifecta #29 & Cher Match Too!
Two of Chancey's grandkids take BOB's

Charmed Weekend At Lakeland

The outcome could not have been scripted any better
than the reality that unfolded at the Lakeland shows this weekend!

Chambrays Charmed N Counter needed a 3-point major win to become Chambray Labradors #21 Home-Bred Champion. With 19 females present for judging, those numbers alone were not enough to accomplish the feat. The only way possible for her to get the major, was for her to win Winners Bitch for 2 points and then beat the Winners Dog (her litter mate Rocky) & also beat all 4 champions, including her sire Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff!!!!!! She had to go the whole nine yards and win over the awesome lineup of specials and win a Best Of Breed!!!!!!!!!

Mission Impossible to say the least, but hey, Never Say Never and with seemingly long odds, Jessica and Charm teamed up for their 3rd Best Of Breed of the year, fulfilling the requirements for the 15 points & 2 majors for the highly coveted AKC  Championship. Later in the day, the dynamic duo would rise into the rarefied air of the Sporting Groups and score a major upset with an astonishing Group 4, astonishing because class dogs seldom if ever receive placements in the groups.

Along the very sweet and shortened journey to her title, she would set some records.

  • Charm becomes the youngest ever Chambray champion at the age of 16 month's

  • Youngest Major-point winner at 7 month's of age

  • Youngest Best Of Breed winner at 12 months

  • Most Best Of Breeds from the classes (3)

  • She is also the 1st champion of our 6th Chambray generation

  • The win today was also her 4th Trifecta in 1 year (actually  1st half of 2008), TRIFECTA = Winners Dog, Winners Bitch and Best Of Breed
Charm has teamed up twice with both her littermate brothers for the phenomenal feat, see Bred By Trifecta #29 below.

Charm was totally championed from the Bred By Exhibitor class by her breeder/owner Jessica Herzon and now they will receive the prestigious invitation to compete at the 2009 & 2010 AKC Eukanuba National Championships.

Jewel & Rocky Also Score Points

WinQuest Chambray Jewel In The Ruff, owned by Faith Bandklayder & Neil Wasserman would save the day for Chambray at Saturday's Lakeland show by winning Winners Bitch for 2 points. This win was Jewel's first AKC venture into the winner's circle of points. Jewel is handled by Johanna Herzon.

Chambrays Hogan's Hero Rocky would join his sister Charm in the winning fest at Sunday's show and take his 4th Winners Dog of the year taking him to a total of 6 points. Rocky is handled by Janice Granda.

Cher wins Best Lab Puppy In Match

Chambrays And The Beat Goes On continues her winning beat ways with yet another Best Labrador Puppy In Match and a Group 2 at the Lakeland Dog Match Saturday night. She also won a 1st place both Saturday and Sunday at the regular shows from the 9 to 12 Puppy Class. Watch for Cher and Jessica Herzon to team up in the Bred By Exhibitor class now that Cher's sister Charm has finished her championship and moves up to the special's class.

Chancey's Legacy Continues

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey  passed on earlier this year at the age of 11 years old, however her imprint at the Florida shows continues as her grandkids dominate the Winner's points as well as the Best of Breeds.

This past weekend at the Lakeland Dog Shows shows, two of her grandkids swept the BOB's, as Mr. Big won it at Saturday and on Sunday Charm came from the classes with a Winners Bitch and then went over the specials, including Mr. Big and over her own sire Hogan to take the Best of Breed award.

Another of Chancey's grandkids, Charm's littermate Rocky would join her win with a Winners Dog and together they would post the 4th Trifecta for the year, making it number 29th for Chambray.

So far this year, Chancey's grandkids have accounted for 15 Winners Dogs/Bitch for 39 points plus more than
7 Best Of Breeds.

Ft Myers Fl May 17 2008

Ft Myers Match

The 7th annual Ft Myers' Match Get Together for Chambray Labradors and the Partners Program was a rousing success. The tradition for this event is for the new owners to actually handle their own puppies in the ring while the Herzons watch from outside the ring.

There were a total of 34 mostly new owners of puppies from the Class of 2007 & Class 2008 that made the trip over to the West Coast of Florida. Not to be excluded from the festivities, some of our long standing partners also attended to witness the new owners handle in the ring. Most of the people came over on Friday night and were on hand for Saturday's regular AKC show, others drove over in the afternoon in time to catch the action of the match.

Chambrays Bailey On the Rocks (Class of 2007) with his owner Neil Wasserman proved the crown with some lively entertainment as bailey would take Best Of Breed Adult Labradors and a Sporting Group 1. It was at that time that Jessie jumped in and handled Bailey to a Best In Match Adult.

Chambrays And The Beat Goes On, "Cher" handled by her owner Mary Jakeway would prevail from the Senior Puppy Class and take a Best Senior Puppy and a Group 3 in the Sporting Group.

Chambrays Scarlett Of The Ribbons owned and handled by her owner, Nina Otto would take a Best Junior Puppy, a Sporting Group 1 and head into the Best In Match competition where the Terrier was awarded BIM Junior Puppy

Congratulations to all our owners for making the trip over and having such a great time. We look forward to next year's event.

Orlando Fl May 3/4th

The International Dog Shows
Orlando Fl

er venue than the International dog shows for debuting puppies and introducing them to the ways of the dog shows. Most of the owners that travel with their new puppies to Orlando twice a year for these shows are also being initiated to a whole different world that most of them did not know existed.

The atmosphere is much more laid back and not as rigid as the AKC shows. Of course the competition is not as stiff, since most of the dogs are from the local Florida community and the majority of the dogs entered are owner handled. Although in the last 3 shows there have been an increase in the numbers of professional handlers that are coming and bring some very nice dogs.

Another big difference at these shows are the different breeds that are registered with the International group. Where as AKC recognizes about 157 breeds of dogs, the IABCA recognizes over 300 breeds from throughout the world.

For Chambray Labradors and the Partners Program, the attraction is that 3 to 6 month old puppies are allowed and with the reduced number of matches in our area, this provides a great proving ground for the up and coming new
puppies and their owners.

Vero Beach Fl April 26/27th
The Math Adds Up At Vero
Hogan BOB & Gr 3
Bailey Winners Dog & BOW

The Vero Beach dog shows provided a great venue to sharpen our pencils,
put on our thinking caps and do the math!

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff, owned by  our good friend and partner Rosie Feeley adds yet another BEST OF BREED to bring his career total to 14 BOB's.  Since he was competing against 4 other specials in Breed competition both days, that gave Chambray 25% of the dogs present in the Breed competition for the weekend, Hogan won 50% of the time! None of the other specials won a BOB since the judge awarded the Breed to the Am Bred class bitch at Saturday's show.

His Group 3 placement on Sunday brings those numbers up to 5 Group wins out of the 14 times he has been in the Sporting Group competition for a whopping 35% ratio. For Labradors, group placements do not come easy competing against all the extra fluffy sporting dogs.

Int Jr Ch Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks, owned by Neil Wasserman and Faith Bandklayder  wins his 5th Winners Dog award for the year accumulating a total of 7 points. With his consistent domination of the Bred By Class and the way he has racked up the Winners Dog points thus far for 2008, he could very well be pointed out at the next AKC shows in Ft Myers on May 17th and 18th. At Vero, there were 2 dogs competing in the Bred By Exhibitor Class both days, with Bailey winning the Bred By Exhibitor class 100% for the weekend and winning the Winners Points 50% of the time for the 2 days of shows.

For those still confused about winning & numbers........it is not how many dogs you bring to a dog show, it is about the quality of those dogs that makes a winner a WINNER!!! Numbers don't lie, winners don't need to!

Chambrays Affinity Chance (Honey) was awarded Best Labrador Puppy over the puppy that won Winners Dog at Saturday's show. Honey is from the 2nd Connie X Hogan 5 Diva's Litter.

UKC BIS/Int Jr Ch Chambrays Hogan's Hero Rocky won his Open Yellow class both days for a 100% batting average and was awarded Reserve Winners Dog at Saturday's show.
Int CH Chambrays Strike Of Genius was awarded Reserve Winners Bitch at Sunday's show.

Perry Ga. April 11/13th
Rocky Does Georgia

UKC BIS/Int Jr Ch Chambrays Hogan's Hero Rocky traveled to the Perry  Ga. dog shows and came back with 2 Winners Dog awards out of the 3 days of showing. Int Jr Ch Chambrays Trinity Makes Waves also made the trip with owner Karen Gjertsen, winning Reserve Winners Bitch twice as both dogs were handled by Janice Granda.

Rocky now has 3 Winners Dog award for a total of 4 points.

Charm Winners Bitch BOB
Bailey Winners Dog Best Of Winners

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey passed away on Friday March 27. Her contributions to Chambray Labradors and the Partners Program for the betterment of the breed have been documented throughout this website in articles, short stories and in this newsletter, however her imprint on the breed can be easily seen on any weekend  at any dog show in Florida, as her grandkids from four of her own kids are constantly in the winner's circle more often than not.

This weekend at the St Pete Dog Shows one of her grandkids from her daughter Am/Int Ch Chambrays Mad About Madeline's would be awarded a Best Of Breed at Saturday's show. Her granddaughter Chambrays Charmed N Counter  from Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chance N Counter (Connie) was awarded Winners Bitch at the same show on Saturday.

On Sunday, Charm won her 2nd Best Of Breed for the year with another Connie son Int Jr Ch Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks being awarded Winners Dog for the 3rd time this year as well, Bailey was also the Reserve Winners Dog at Saturday's show.

March 15th/16 2008 Ft Lauderdale Dog Show
Chief Wins! Cher Wins! Charm Reserve

Hail To The Chief!!!!

Int Ch WinQuest Chambray Chief Stroup's story has been well documented throughout the Chambray website. He has his own page of adventure, accolades and awards (click on his name above), his owners, Ralph and DeeDee Stroup have written several articles that are available at the Reference Library describing their acquisition and rearing of our adventurous boy and now we add yet another chapter to his 2.5 year existence as a great family dog and also prime show dog, he is now AKC champion-pointed!!!!!!!

Due to health issues with the Stroup family, Chief came to live at Chambray Farms back in November of 2007 and for 4 months he has been in training getting him ready for the big time and that time has arrived. In the last 4 weekends of shows he has won the very tough Open Yellow Class 4 out of 8 show for a 50% average and has been awarded a Reserve Winners dog in addition to the Winners Dog from today.

Chief will next be at the St Pete dog shows on March 29/30 and may well go home to be with his family that has missed him tremendously. We look forward to Chief to continue his winning ways for the rest of the 2008 spring and summer show season.

Congratulations to my good friends and partners Ralph and Dee Dee Stroup who as partners for the betterment of the breed, I could not ask for anything more. They have always been there with 100% support for Chief and for Chambray and for the Partners Program.

Congratulations also to my co-breeder and partner Geraldo De Souza of WinQuest Labradors.

Cher Wins Best Labrador Puppy/Gr 3 & RWB

Chambrays And The Best Goes on, aka "Cher" wins her second Best Labrador Puppy in the last 3 weekends of shows and also takes a Group 3 at the Saturday Ft Lauderdale Dog Shows, she was also awarded Reserve Winners Bitch.

Chambrays Charmed N Counter came close on Sunday with a Reserve Winners Bitch as well.

March 9th 2008 West Palm Beach Dog Show

Yet Another Chancey Weekend

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey is now 11 year's old and has long since been retired from showing, but her influence at the Florida dog shows continues with yet another generation of dogs dominating the wins.

In her time, with very limited campaigning Chancey racked up the Best Of Breed wins and also multiple sporting group and then her 3 daughters and 1 son took over starting in 2002 and continued the family domination through 2006 with all the followings wins, awards, accolades and accomplishments between them.

  • 4 AKC Champions

  • 4 International Best In Shows

  • 37 AKC Best of Breeds

  • 2 AKC Group 1's

  • 12 AKC Group Placements

  • # 22 Ranking USA

  • # 1 Ranking Florida

  • A Best Puppy In Show

  •  Eukanuba

  • Westminster

Now a new generation, her grandkids, are at the forefront of the wins at the dog shows in Florida. At the Boca Raton dog shows back in February, it was her granddaughter Chambrays Charm that would win back to back Winners Bitch, with her grandson, Chambrays Bailey taking Winners Dog both days and Charm was awarded Best Of Breed on Sunday to complete the 2nd Family Perfecta ever recorded for Chancey. The first was accomplished by her son Lance taking Winners Dog, her daughter Maddie taking Winners Bitch and her other daughter Karley taking Best Of Breed all at the same shows.

At the recent West Palm Beach Show, her grandkids would repeat the feat with her grandson Mr. Big taking Best Of Breed, another grandson Rocky taking Winners Dog and her granddaughter Charm going Winners Bitch.

Let's give credit where credit is due................
Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey,
the Chancey Legacy continues!

Congratulations to Rocky and Charm

UKC /Int Ch Chambrays Hogan's Hero Rocky wins his first points with a Winners Dog for 2 points and Best Of Winners at the recent West Palm Beach dog shows. Chambrays Charmed N Counter would join Rocky in the winners circle with her 3rd Winners bitch of the year and the 3rd time she joins up with one of her littermate brothers to sweep the Winners Dog/Winners Bitch awards.

March 1st 2008 South Dade Kennel Club

Hogan Wins His 13th BOB

Hogan added to his breed count by winning his 13th Best Of Breed in 1 year's time. It was last year in March that he took Best Of Breed back-to-back at the West Palm Beach Club dog shows to begin the awesome odyssey that propelled him to the # 18 Labrador in the USA for the 2007 show season. So far for 2008, he has added 2 more Best Of Breeds to his growing resume as a special's dog.

Chambrays all time record for BOB was recorded by 2 of our past champions, first in 1994-1995 by Ch Chambrays Caleb and then tied by Ch Chambrays Maddie, both with 18 Best Of Breeds over their illustrious show careers.

Monster Weekend For Chambray

A Family Affair of Trifectas

The Boca Raton Dog Shows on February 23/24 provided the backdrop for one of the most awesome show weekends for Chambray Labradors ever with back to back Trifectas! That's Winners Dog & Winners Bitch & Best Of Breed by dogs from the same kennel all in one show. Prior to this weekend, Chambrays had accomplished the feat a state record 25 times, now numbers 26 and 27 make it even sweeter as it was achieved by a sire and his offspring on succeeding days.

Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks won Winners Dog at Saturday's show and his littermate, Chambrays Charmed N Counter won Winners Bitch/Best Of Winners and that was followed by their sire, Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff taking the triple crown of Best Of Breed.

Sunday's results were similar but with a twist! Bailey repeated as Winners Dog, while Charm repeated as Winners Bitch, then came the twist as she was also awarded Best Of Winners & Best Of Breed.

These two  "Family" Trifectas were preceded by the first ever Chambray family Trifecta back in the summer of 2004 when 3 offspring's of Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey would go into our record books with the incredible feat*. That day it would be Ch Chambrays Twist Of Fate winning Best Of Breed, her half brother Chambrays Chisholm Sir Lancelot winning Winners Dog, Best Of Winners and her littermate sister Chambrays Maddie taking Winners Bitch. Not coincidentally, Chancey is Charm and Bailey's grandmother.

* Call It What You May; It’s A Real Big Deal!  (read about the first-ever family Trifecta recorded for Chambray Labradors)

This weekend's wins go into the record books for Chambrays with the following.

  • 1st littermate Winners Dog - Winners Bitch & do it again at the next day's show!!

  • 1st sire & littermates combining for a Trifecta (Saturday's show)

  • 1st littermates to combine for a Trifecta (Sunday's show)

  • Youngest Best Of Breed Winner, Charm. She already owns the record for the youngest puppy ever to win a major-pointed show in November 2007 as a 7 month old puppy

  • Youngest Chambray male to win points, Bailey at 12 months of age and then wins again the next day.

November 2007
Banner Month of Good News!

Optigen Results, OFA Results, Hogan Continues Winning-Producing Great Litters & His Puppies Keep The Beat Going!

Surely November of 2007 will be a memorable month for Chambray Labradors and the Partners Program for the Betterment of the Breed.

With the advent of DNA testing for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) available at more affordable rates, 9 more dogs were tested and each and every one passed with perfect results, CLEAR of PRA. That means that none of these dogs will ever come down with the dreaded blinding disease, nor will they ever pass it on to any of their offspring. Congratulations to each of their owners for these great results and thank you for investing in the future of the breed. Congratulations to the following dogs and owners for taking part in the Betterment of the Breed.

De Land Fl. Delightful Weekend

Chambray & the Partners Program for the Betterment of the Breed enjoyed a most delightful weekend with a Winners Bitch/Best Of Opposite Sex win by Chambrays Charmed N Counter at her very first AKC show, making her the youngest ever Chambray dog to score major-pointed championship points. She is now 7 months old.

Making the win by Charm even more delightful was the fact that she is a grand daughter of Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chisholm Chancey,  adding to her great contributions to the breed was that the Winners Dog/Best Of Winners/Best Of Breed is also a grandson of Chancey.

Rounding out the awesome weekend was Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff (Hogan) winning his 8th Best Of Breed award and also his 3rd Group placement this year. Hogan is Charm's sire from his first ever litter with Am/Int Ch Chambrays Chance N Counter.

Turning in excellent performances were

Connie & Hogan's Encore Performance

The bags were packed, the appointment was made for a c-section with Dr. Eich in Ft Lauderdale and we were ready for an "easy" delivery. I say easy, because I have been having heart problems lately and one of the things at the top of the "Do List" was to lessen STRESS!!!!!!!!!!!
Of course my regular 6 CUPS OF CUBAN COFFEE per day were already non-existent for the last 2 weeks. I had already cut back considerably my daily dog training appointments
and me and the missus agreed not to disagree as much!

So, I figured I had all the bases covered.

A thorough examination was performed by the vets, blood test was sent out to the lab and  X-rays were taken 6 days before the due date and 6 little outlines were detected even by the untrained eye, mine! The c-section was scheduled for day 60 on Wednesday, and all was set.

NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

However, no one told Connie about our plans and she surprises the entire Herzon family with a 16 oz. white female at 12:30 AM Tuesday morning (08/14/07). Connie ate her dinner 6 hours earlier and showed no signs of delivery with no contractions, even 1/2 hour before the puppy was found crawling next to her in her large condo-crate. So imagine our amazement at this turn of events.

STRESSSSSSS, extra medication and hoping that all goes well with the delivery until I can drive the hour to Ft Lauderdale at 6AM.

Well, the Powers From Up Above were looking down upon me and the entire delivery went like clockwork. The only hitch was delivery #3 at 2:45 AM. She had extra contractions, extra pushing and then out plops a 7 OZ tiny puppy!!!!! Well that doesn't make sense! All that extra stuff for a super tiny puppy and then out comes the placenta with another tiny little puppy attached!!!!!

TWINS!!!!!!!! One was 7 OZ and the other was 6 OZ, GIRLS!!!!!

From then on a puppy came every hour and a half and all the puppies were girls!!

By the time it came to pack up and leave for the vets at 6 AM, she was finished and all was well. No need for a c-section or the long ride.

Connie at 52 days pregnant looks on as Jessie works her son, Bailey from the first litter.

Hogan Hits The Big Time!!

The newest rankings are in for 2007 and Hogan is now listed at #19 for the period from January 1st to June 30th 2007, in the Canine Chronicle. In very limited showing, locally in Florida and against some of the highest ranked Labs in the country that have traveled down this way, he has managed to win 6 Best of Breeds in 15 shows to earn those 227 Breed points. With shows in September, October, November and December, we expect Hogan to add a few more BOB's before the year is out. Since the rankings came out on June 30th, Hogan added to his national breed count with another Best Of Breed at the Sarasota shows.

Caramela Wins Again!

What more can you say about the dog that does it all? She's the apple of her owner's eye, she's a Companion K-9 for  the K-9 For Kids Program, she's a Therapy Dog Inc., she competes in Rally and has a title to prove it and today at West Palm Beach she wins Winners Bitch/Best Of Winners at the last show of the summer show season! What a joy she is to all that meet her and 3 judges in 7 months of very limited showing have liked her enough to award her Winners Bitch on those 3 occasions. Congratulations to her owner, Maki Nieto-Menendez who partners with "Caro" in all these activities.

Rocky Wins Best Labrador Puppy & Group II

The Hogan X Connie puppies are 4 for 4 at Florida matches, with Int Baby Ch Chambrays Hogan's Hero (Rocky) winning Best Labrador Puppy at the very first match at Vero in April and now Best Labrador Puppy at the 4th match in West Palm Beach. In between those 2 matches, Rocky's sister Chambrays Charmed N Counter was to win best Labrador Puppy and Best Puppy In Match at the Davie match on May 1st and their brother, In Baby Ch Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks winning Best Labrador Puppy at the Ft Myers match in May 19th.

Hogan Adds Another BOB & Group II
Venice Dog Show July 8th
Dusty Wins 2pt Winners Dog

The Chambray boys came through at the 2nd day of shows at Venice Fl. with a 2pt Winners Dog win for Int Ch Carmays Duststorm At Chambray CGC, now with 12 points and 1 major to his credits and only needing a 3pt major for his AKC champion's title. Dusty seemingly had hit a major dry spell with his last win coming in November of 2006 and none so far in 2007. He will now have to wait for a major-pointed show to get back in the ring. Jessica Herzon handled both boys to their wins, with Dusty winning from the Open Yellow Class and Hogan winning as a "specials" from the Breed ring.

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff CGC continues his 4-month dominance at the Florida shows with his 7th Best Of Breed since the West Palm Beach shows in March. Since then he has gone head to head with the #3, the #5, the #12 and #19 Labradors in the country in 17 shows, including the Westminster BOB winner and a Eukanuba BOB winner. All these BOBs count for the 2007 Eukanuba Championships, with the Top 25 Dogs in each breed receiving an invitation to compete at the prestigious venue. A dog who wins a Best Of Breed receives 1 point for each dog of that breed in competition for the day. In previous years 300 points was almost a sure bet for making the Top 25, Hogan now has 262 breed points and the deadline is September 30th for totals.

Reading & Enrichment Service Programs

Chambray Labradors & the Partners Program for the Betterment of the Breed in partnership with Maki Nieto-Menendez proudly announce the launching of a community service program bringing together teams of specially trained dogs with their owners to serve as Therapy Dogs in school, clinic and hospital settings.

The K-9 For Kids program will serve to assess, train, evaluate and certify suitable dogs and their owners to participate in pre-approved facilities where children may benefit from the therapeutic value that dogs of this nature provide.

Maki will oversee the entire program, with Chambray Dog Training providing the majority of training needed to qualify as a candidate for the program. As a community service, free of charge, Maki will provide the evaluations for the dogs to be certified Therapy Dogs.

All of the members of the Partners Program, Chambray owners, Professional Canine Service clients and other dog related contacts have been notified and encouraged to
participate in this great community service program.

For more information, contact us at labs@chambraylabradors.com

Editors Note: July 2nd 2007 - The K-9 For Kids programs mentioned above were announced on June 27th 2007 and to date the response has been overwhelming in support and in interest for participation, both from the groups mentioned above and from visitors to the Chambray website. Thank you to all that have pledged support and contributions.

Hogan Dominates The BOB At Orlando
2 Out Of 3 Days

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff CGC added 2 more Best Of Breeds to his already impressive resume bringing his Best Of Breeds total to 6 for the 2007 Eukanuba national rankings. This weekend's wins come over 7 champions including the #5 and #12 Labradors in the country. The 2 wins added big numbers to his national totals as there were 53 dogs
entered each day.

Each year from October 1st to September 30th the following year, Best Of Breed totals are kept for each breed and the top 25 dogs in each breed receive an invitation to compete at the AKC Eukanuba National Championships.

Traditionally in Labradors it takes close to 300 points to reach the prestigious 25th place in the rankings, of course a higher placement creates better bragging rights!

At this time we don't have an official count, nor a standing  for Hogan, but we figure that he has close to 250 points as of this writing and we still have 6 Florida shows left until the September 30th deadline.

UCI International Shows

This past weekend, the UCI International Shows were held in Orlando Florida and that's 4 shows in 2 days, so talk about hectic!!!!!! Well, now add handling 13 Labradors times those 4 shows and your talking real turkey here folks or maybe that's chickens with their head's cutoff!

Okay, okay, for the animal rights people, let's not be so graphic, but it was grueling to say the least, however as the famous credit card commercial states, those 4 shows  were PRICELESS for each dog there!

Priceless in terms of training and exposure for each of the 13 dogs and puppies that made the trip and priceless for each of their families that were there rooting them on. No training class, nor match, not even an AKC show provides so much hand's on training for a dog as this particular venue does.

Although Chambray Labradors and the Partners Program dogs have dominated the Labrador wins at every International Show in the last 5 years, this one will certainly go down as one of our very best. According to the UCI superintendent, this was the very first time that he could recall where Labrador puppies won all 4 Group 1's and represented the Sporting Groups in Best In Show!!!

Jane Roppolo, renown AKC judge and the Labrador judge for show #3 proclaimed to me "This is the best lineup of Labrador puppies that I have seen in many, many years of judging" she said referring to our puppies and she further stated "I know and like your type and this group is just superb".

The Labrador judge for show #2 stated that "Your male puppies have set the bar so high for every other Labrador out there and it is difficult comparing the rest of the dogs to them!"

Caramela's New Title

Double-click to add photos

How about this amazing dog, one day she is doing her thing with Maki as a Therapy Dog having kids read to her and the next day she's running through a specially marked course of  exercises to earn her Rally Novice (RN) title! In order to earn the RN title, a dog must score at least a 70 out of a 100 points at 3 different trials; each successful trial is called a leg, so a dog must earn 3 legs to achieve the title for that particular level of Rally competition.

Having scored the required above-70 scores at each of her first 3 trials, she earned her 3 qualifying "legs" and now is officially Int Ch Chambrays Greenhead Caramela CGC TDI SARA RN. While all the titles are great to have, her greatest attribute is her devotion to Maki in whatever Maki decides to participate in. "Caro" now serves as Maki's Service Dog on trips away from home, providing Maki with comfort and companionship to alleviate stress. As an officially certified and accredited Service Dog, Caro may accompany her handler anywhere, including the work place, public places, stores and even on an airplane.

K-9 Reading Program In The News

Chambrays Greenhead Caramela CGC TDI SARA goes to school!

One of the local TV stations featured an exciting concept in education recently on one of their broadcasts; using dogs for area school's reading programs. Teams of specially trained and certified dogs along with their trainers visit schools that have pre-approved the project. The dogs are brought into the reading classes where children will read out loud to the dogs.

Those in charge of the program say that children are less inhibited and are  more likely to read to a dog than they are to the teacher or in front of the whole class. Reading specialists say that improvement in reading skills can be documented by the use of this K-9 to Kids reading program.

Upon viewing the segment on WTVJ recently, it was my extreme delight to see that both dogs used in this upstart project were Chambray dogs. One of them is owned by one of my closest friends and Partners Program participant, Maki Nieto with Chambrays Greenhead Caramela CGC TDI SARA. Maki is one of the local program's founders and now provides testing and evaluations for certification for new dogs and owners that are interested in joining this wonderful volunteer activity.

Stay tuned for more information on this K-9 For Kids Reading Program in the months to come. Maki may be contacted at  MCNieto@aol.com for more information.

Way to go girls!!!!!

Editors Note: I have received many emails asking about this very special program. Maki Nieto has provided more information with the following:

In several programs, nationwide, it has been shown that Therapy Dogs used in reading programs improve reading skills by encouraging children to read one-on-one with a trained volunteer.

There are physiological benefits to interacting with dogs that encourage a more relaxed learning environment, including increased relaxation and lower blood pressure.   Children find that reading to a dog is less intimidating.   Participation in a therapy dog reading program is a helpful activity and can transform the formerly feared reading experience into a positive environment in which learning is facilitated.

Children tend to focus better on an activity or discussion when a dog is present. An additional advantage is that the child is very inclined to forget his/her reading limitations while working with the dog. Reading to the dog is far less intimidating than standing up and reading to their classmates and teachers. Children are often more willing to interact with an animal than another person.

This past school year, our own Caramela (Chambrays Greenhead Caramela) and I participated in the initiation of this type of program at a local elementary school.  For 9 weeks, Caramela and another therapy dog visited this school and sat quietly while the children read to them.  Both dogs were very well received by the administration as well as the faculty and children at the school.  Improved reading skills were noted, even in such a short period of time.  The experiment was a success as has been found throughout the country with other canine assisted reading programs for children!

Now, we  hope to encourage and enlist other dog/handler teams to participate in other neighborhood schools.  In order to be eligible the team must, first, be registered with a therapy dog organization.  Caramela and I are registered with Therapy Dog, Inc., which is a nationwide organization, based in Cheyenne, Wyoming. I am  a Tester/Observer for this organization and I am  authorized to perform the official evaluation and testing of potential therapy dog teams.

The second step for dog/handler teams is for the handler to obtain the official volunteer clearances from Miami-Dade County Public Schools.  After the clearance is obtained, the team can be assigned to volunteer at a school.

Stay tuned, and we will be updating this section to inform any one who is interested on how they can get through the process and begin participating in this wonderful volunteer activity.

Family Affair Weekend
At Ft Myers

The Ft Myers Dog Shows provided the backdrop for a truly family affair weekend for Chambray, the Partners Program and the many new owners that made the 2-hour trek over to the west coast to watch the shows and also to participate in the Puppy Match  on Saturday night.

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff (Hogan) scores his 4th Best Of Breed of the year at Saturday's show to start off the winnings for team Chambray. I had the honors of handling Hogan for the day, as Jessie his regular handler was back in Miami at her graduation prom. Hogan was to go beyond the Labrador ring by winning his first group placement, an awesome Group 2!!!!

After the show on Saturday the club hosted a Puppy Match in the evening that was attended by most of the New K9 Kids On The Block. Before this match, 2 of the puppies from the Hogan X Connie litter had won Best Labrador Puppy at the 2 other matches attended, with Chambrays Hogan's Hero (Rocky) taking Best Labrador Puppy at Vero and then went on to a Group 1. Chambrays Charmed N Counter followed that act with a Best Labrador Puppy, Group 1 & Best Puppy In Match at the Davie Match.

For this match it would be Chambrays Bailey On The Rocks that would rise to the top and beat out the other Chambray kids for Best Labradors Puppy, he also was awarded a Group 4 in sporting.

Rounding out the family affair weekend was Hogan's sister and Bailey's aunt, Int Ch Chambrays Summer Arrogance winning her 3rd Winners Bitch and a Best Of Opposite Sex over 2 specials, adding two more points to her champion points . In addition she was awarded Best Bred By Exhibitor Labrador.

Congratulations to all the winners and to all the puppy owners that made the trip, as all of the puppies performed beautifully!!!

Am/Int Ch Chambrays Out Of The Ruff (Hogan) continued his winning ways at the South Dade Kennel Club dog show with his 3rd Best Of Breed of the year, going over the Labrador specials that won BOB at Westminster in February.

Int Ch Chambrays Strike Of Genius  (Frida) becomes the 3rd different bitch to win  points this year, following after Dahlia at Palmetto and Sammie at Vero. This now gives Frida 2 Winners Bitch and 4 points towards her AKC champion's title.

Int Ch WinQuest Chambray Some Like It Hot wins her 2nd Winners Bitch award in as many weekends. She now goes into second place at the Scoreboard with 6 points toward her championship.

Charming The Judge

Double-click to add photos

Without missing a beat at the recent Davie Fl match, Chambrays Charmed N Counter went from 1st place female Lab Puppy to Best Labrador Puppy and then  kicked it into high gear and waltzed to a Group 1 from the Sporting Group .

The competition in Best In Match was formidable and it took a Quick Step by her handler Ryan Herzon to sashay out of the ring with a Best  Puppy In Match.

The judge, long time Labrador Retriever owner and exhibitor of champions himself, Hector Hector was totally smitten with Charm and her future potential as a show dog and even a "specials dog" once she titles. He confessed to be leaning towards the Boston Terrier for the BIM award, but could not deny the overall conformation and performance and awesome presentation by Ryan in the ring with Charm.

Two professional handlers on the scene also commented on how Charm and Ryan reminded them of Karley and Jessie in their run for the roses in 2004 with a Labrador Retriever National Ranking of 22 USA and eventual invitation to the Eukanuba

Although it is a bit premature to be thinking at those levels with a 3 month old puppy, it sure does validate the entire Partners Program for the Betterment of the Breed.

Sammie Shines @ Vero

Iples takes a 2-point Winners Bitch to add to her 2 other WB for a total of 5 Points at the Treasure Coast Dog Club shows in Vero Beach. She was also awarded Best Of Winners in addition to her Winners Bitch placement.

Chambrays Hogan's Hero (Rocky) one of the outrageous puppies from Connie X Hogan litter took Best Labrador Puppy at the match that followed the show and then went on to take a Group 1 from the Sporting Group. Rocky is owned by new owner Karen Gjertsen.
