I founded the SEFL
Rescue & Relocation in 1993, a year after Hurricane Andrew
devastated much of South Dade
county, including my home and my kennels!
In that time
there have been well over 390 Labradors (several other breeds also)
that have been rescued, re-united with their owners, re-homed with
new owners or relocated to another facility or shelter.
Originally, I
envisioned a community of Labrador breeders, owners and exhibitors
that would get involved either statewide or on a regional bases to
aid in rescue and relocation of our breed. I published a website to
enlist other responsible Florida breeders to join in and create a
statewide program to aid in Labrador rescue and relocation.
Needless to say,
there has been very little cooperation in a venture such as this and
I have single-handedly manned
the fort with the project. From that number (390 Labradors), there
have been a dozen that were Chambray bred
dogs that needed rescue/relocation, leaving well over 370 that came
from other breeders in Florida and also a
few from out of state.
A large
percentage of those 390 dogs came to stay for extended periods of
time here at Chambray Acres.
Where they were housed, fed, micro-chipped and trained by the
Herzons.
Once a home was
found for them, I provided free training for the new owners, both on
a private basis and also at my training classes.
That is how it
has worked for 17 long years.
I regret to
inform all of those that have known of the project and that have
referred possible rescues to me, that I
will no longer continue with the project.
There are many
reasons for terminating the project.
1. Economic
reasons. I can no longer provide the funds needed for maintenance on
rescues
2. Zoning Laws
limiting the number of dogs on a property. I have my own dogs as the
limit
and can not house any more.
3. I no longer
have the energy.
As responsible
breeders and professional trainers, we will continue
to rescue & re-home Chambray-bred Labradors that need it.
